Dr. Tony Evans, I am that I am means God exists within Himself and nothing outside of Him contributes to His existence.

Jehovah: The Self Revealing One, Part 1

Knowing God’s Names Vol 1
God could have spent all of history hiding out in heaven, never even giving us a glimpse of who He is. But next time on The Alternative, Dr. Tony Evans will talk about how God openly reveals himself in unmistakable ways.

The construction of the sun is that it keeps itself hot. God has given us in creation as what self-generation looks like. That’s awesome! God is eternal and His self existence includes self-sufficiency. God is independent. He can generate within Himself. In His eternal nature He is immutable. He does not change in His essence. We are forever changing until we enter eternity. I am never steps out of the present tense. God can never become irrelevant because He is right now. 1 billion years from now God is I am. He is in the present 1 billion years from now. He can’t make a mistake.

Isaiah 46:3-4 “Listen to me, O house of Jacob, all the remnant of the house of Israel, who have been borne by me from before your birth, carried from the womb; even to your old age I am he, and to gray hairs I will carry you. I have made, and I will bear; I will carry and will save.”

God, as a benevolent Father, has said that He cares for His people, even into their old age, unlike many in the world today. It is as if God carried them along the way, even into their older days, thus showing them that God will not ever forsake them and never will He leave them (Deut 31:8; Heb 13:5).

In the Old Testament, there were laws like, “You shall stand up before the gray head and honor the face of an old man, and you shall fear your God: I am the Lord” (Lev 19:32) which is a sign of respect. How many still stand up when an elderly person walks into the room? When was the last time you saw that happen? James wrote that“Religion that is pure and undefiled before God, the Father, is this: to visit orphans and widows in their affliction, and to keep oneself unstained from the world” (James 1:27). Pure religion is never just talk; it is backed up by action.
